Sub Urban: New Drawings
2015
Exhibitions
Overview
Barbara Walker was invited to create a series of new site-specific wall drawings for the James Hockey Gallery in 2015. Working in the gallery over two months Walker’s resulting exhibition consisted of large-scale charcoal drawings made directly on to the gallery walls. The images were derived from photographs of anonymous individuals photographed by Walker in and around the Farnham area where the University gallery is located.
Sub Urban: New Drawings considers stereotypes through the study of dress codes and fashion worn primarily by young people. Through the use of portraiture and drawing, scale and intricate compositions, Walker’s art offers a powerful mediation on the representation and social status of the young in contemporary Britain.
The exhibition was organised by the University for the Creative Arts’s Cultural Programme, Farnham, curated by Richard Hylton.
